We’ve all had them, they’re unattractive, annoying and luckily for us easy to fix! Trichoptilosis, also known as split ends, is the longitudinal splitting or fraying of the hair fiber due to excessive heat and mechanical stress. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what causes split ends. Factors such as: curling irons and other heating tools may cause split ends. Chemical processes, like perms and hair coloring can strip the protective layering off the outside of the hair’s shaft and weaken the hair, making your tresses more prone to split ends.
Unfortunately, while there isn’t any cure or treatment for split ends, there are steps that you can take to prevent split ends from occurring. Take a look below!
1. Get your hair trimmed regularly every 6 to 8 weeks.
2. Limit chemical processing (i.e hair coloring, perms etc)
3. Protect your tresses from chlorine, salt water and fresh water when swimming.
4. Deep condition regularly
5. Reduce the use of heat styling tools
