We’ve all seen them, they promise thick full hair, glowing skin and claim to put an end to brittle nails, but how much do we really now about these supplements? What’s in them and how does the daily dosage effect our bodies? Most importantly do they work?
The main ingredient in this supplements is biotin. Biotin is a vitamin of the B complex, found in egg yolk, liver, and yeast. It is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids and glucose and it is believed to also improve the keratin infrastructure (a basic protein that makes up hair, skin and nails).
While biotin deficiency is rare having low levels can result in hair loss and brittle nails. And, it seems that by taking biotin supplements they may actually halt this process and even help to reverse it.
So, the good news is that taking these supplements may actually improve your hair density and nail deficiency, but it’s important to note that consulting your physician before starting any supplement is highly recommended.
