Hairstyles and Stereotypes PSA

After attending the star studded Oscars on Sunday, singer/actress Zendaya Coleman found herself in the midst of a media storm after E! Fashion Police host Giuliana Ranic slammed her bohemian inspired dreaded hairstyle. Referring to the look as “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil… or maybe weed.”

While it’s true that dreadlocks have been associated with Rastafarians and hippies for decades, does this stereotype imply that those groups of people are nothing more than pot smoking, uncouth individuals? And, most importantly why does that stigma even exisit? Hair is a form of expression, like ART and fashion, it doesn’t have a creed or color. It’s time that stereotypes like these are put to rest and for us all to just appreciate the artistry of great hair styling.
